Beat the Heat

With Memorial Day weekend right around the corner, we need to be cautious with the heat. With temperatures over 70 degrees, the heat can harm pets within a matter of minutes! Take these simple precautions to help beat the heat!

  1. Find some shade! Pets can get dehydrated very quickly! Be sure your pet has a shady place to rest. Provide plenty of fresh, clean water. Be careful not to over-exercise them and keep them inside when it is extremely hot outside.
  2. Know the warning signs! It is important to know the early warning signs of heat stroke. It can save your pets life! Symptoms include excessive panting, drooling, mild weakness or even collapse, brick red gums, and an elevated heartrate.
  3. Keep them out of the car! It can reach well over 100 degrees in a car in a matter of minutes, even when it is only 70 degrees outside.  Your pet will overheat very quickly if left in a hot car. Cracked windows or not, it is never a safe place to keep your pet!

If your pet is showing any signs of heat stroke it is very important to get to your veterinarian for immediate care! It is always better safe than sorry! So remember, plenty of shade and water! Always keep your pet safe inside if necessary! With these simple tips it will be a safe and happy holiday weekend for everyone!
