Recently at Ark Animal Hospital, we have treated a number of dogs for upper respiratory diseases – formally known as CIRDS. Because of the highly infectious nature of this disease complex, we want to share this information in the hopes of preventing further spread to your dog!

What is Canine Infectious Respiratory Disease Syndrome (CIRDS)?

Canine Infectious Respiratory Disease Syndrome encompasses a number of upper respiratory infections caused by different types of pathogens. There are both viruses and bacteria that can contribute to CIRDS. The most well-known of these is a bacteria called Bordetella bronchiseptica, causing what is classically known as “kennel cough”.

What signs might I notice with CIRDS?

-dry, hacking cough (“goose honk”)

-retching

-watery nasal discharge

-dogs still active and eating normally

Is treatment available if my dog contracts CIRDS?

Yes! Cough suppressants are the mainstay of treatment, because the continued dry cough causes inflammation of the throat. Also, an antibiotic can be prescribed if a bacterial component is suspected. It is also helpful to bring your dog into the bathroom with the shower running – the warm, humid air sooths the throat. And remember, keep your dog at home for 2 weeks to prevent spread to other dogs.

How can I protect my dog?

CIRDS is highly contagious from one dog to another. Reducing exposure to infected dogs in settings where dogs are in close contact (boarding, grooming, dog parks, etc) can reduce the spread of disease. Vaccinating your dog is the best way to prevent infection. We recommend vaccination against Bordetella bronchiseptica with a vaccine that is squirted in your dog’s cheek pouch.  We also recommend vaccinations for Canine Influenza.
